Dear NYC,

January 10, 2010

Dear New York City,

Liza is in town! She’s one of my oldest friends. (For more info about her mother, see my first post). Thank you for the fun last night.

p.s. Don’t worry about the weather. It’s cool.

Due to the F’d up weekend subway schedule, Liza and I had 30 minutes of quality time on a platform at Atlantic ave. Good conversations can happen anywhere. The highlight of this one was: “What would our dream lives be like?” Kind of a tricky topic, especially between two women in the no-man’s land of grad school. Not where you want to be, but closer.

I won’t go into the gory details of the films I would make, the essays I would write, the places I would go, or the political causes I would get involved in. We don’t have 30 minutes. Fast forward. By the time the N train pulled up, it was clear that the “dream life” is not out of reach, even with the demands of medical school. Maybe there are sources of happiness more rewarding than achievement.

Thanks to cold weather, delayed public transit, and a visitor with good questions, I might be on a mission.
