Weekend update

February 9, 2010

I know it’s been a few days. I would have posted this yesterday, except I was caught blogging in lab… you can imagine my embarrasment.

If this weekend were a movie star, it would be Jennifer Jason Leigh. It was a versatile, entertaining, and understated few days.

Our friend Rachel came to visit. Her superpower is her sensitive eardrum. Not only is she a good listener. She’s a really good sound engineer, currently in the midst of soul searching. Where is her destiny recording studio?

Rach came on Friday night. It was cold. Not snowing. Never trust a weatherman. We walked to an art show at a coffeeshop in the neighborhood. A crazy scene –  imagine a rave with everybody naked and covered in cocaine. I’m lying. It was a coffee shop art show, not Burning Man. Never trust me either. We had a free drink, the DJ packed up, and we called it an early night.

Saturday featured pancakes at Tom’s, me at the Brooklyn library all day, and a dance party in the Brooklyn art museum that night. A group of us ended up back at my place. We made grilled cheese and played kings. By the way, if YOU ever want to play kings, here are the rules (a la wikipedia).

Sunday – me still trying to translate our Interstitial Lung Disease lecture into English, until about 4:30 in the afternoon. If you are good at Brooklyn geography you might realize I hadn’t gone farther than a 3 block radius from my apartment… until this point in our story. Rachel and I went to a show on the lower east side, where our friend Devin was playing – by the way, check out Devin Greenwood’s music. John Montrose met up with us. We took Rachel to the subway. Post love-hugs-goodbye-Rachel, JM and I went to Harlem for the end of the super bowl. We missed the half time show. I watched it on youtube yesterday, and I finally understand why everyone is so afraid of aging.

On the way home, a man riding in my subway car had a seizure. No gory details. I helped turn him onto his side, and remembered why I want to be a doctor. He stopped shaking, started breathing again. The ambulance came and John Montrose and I walked the rest of the way home.

With that, onto the workweek. Here’s to productivitiy.

easily my favorite part of the Kings wiki:

    Criticism

The game has been criticized for causing players to ingest alcohol too quickly, causing blood alcohol contents to rapidly peak, which can result in death.[9][10] For this reason, “Powerade Pong” tournaments have taken place, where players drink Powerade rather than alcohol while playing common drinking games, such as kings.[13] Some American universities, such as Appalachian State University, have banned kings and other similar games on the college campuses.[14]
