This morning a British neuroscientist on NPR spoke about a woman named Mitochondrial Eve.

200,000 years ago a major genetic mutation allowed her to have an enormous brain compared to everyone else… which became the prototype for the modern human brain. She’s kind of the mother of humanity.

I like this theory. Mitochondria are my favorite organelle. They have their own DNA, they live in symbiosis with the rest of the cell, and they follow maternal inheritance. Not to mention they are little energy factories. I rest my case.

Unfortunately Y-chromosome Adam didn’t come around until thousands of years later, so who knows who Eve’s boyfriend was.  Imagine, a woman smarter than everyone around her, with no one to date but a bunch of monkeys…
